This book is a thriller that I would describe as part hardboiled/noir detective type story, and part love story. The story is told in three parts, with a total of 33 chapters and about 386 pages.James is a hard working DEA agent, closing in on Edward Lang, the powerful head of a pharmaceutical company and suspected illegal drug kingpin. When James comes home to his beloved wife Rosie, and finds that she has murdered her boss Frank, he has to think fast and decide what to do to protect the woman he loves so much. Will his work life and criminal investigation be derailed by this cover-up? As the plot unfolds, it seems like there might be more going on than initially suspected...The writing style here is somewhat reminiscent of gritty hardboiled police detective novels; with witty banter back and forth, and the background of a bleak and unforgiving city. Lots of short sentences and profanity. I usually don't mind this style, but something about the delivery just seemed a bit forced to me; so I had a hard time connecting with the protagonist James and feeling really invested in the story. There were also little things that seemed unrealistic, which made it harder to identify with the motivations of the characters.Personally, I preferred the other First Reads book “Constance” over this one. “Constance” has more scifi and future elements, while this is more of an older detective novel style. I didn't enjoy the writing style as much with this book, and I wasn't the biggest fan of this ending either. Just my personal preferences of course, you might feel differently. 3.5 / 5 My first read by this author. No spoilers in this review, but the basic plot involves DEA agent James - closing in on the biggest bust of his career - suddenly having to cover up a crime his wife committed. His enemies soon find out about this and blackmail him into assisting them. An exciting and more original premise then the usual procedures. There's lots of unpredictable twists and a fast flowing story as James tries to extricate himself from his predicament.I enjoyed this book but didn't love it for a few reasons. The writing style of the author just doesn't appeal to me. I dislike books that insist on jumping between the past and present which is what happens here. It does make sense to a degree as James's childhood relationships do shape his actions in the present, but I feel there must have been an easier way to get that point across. There's lots of short sentences and things like "Me and Rosie went to the store" or "Me and Matt walked down the road" opening paragraphs which come across as a little amateurish to me. Lots of profanity too - I'll never get why authors feel like they need to throw f bombs in left and right.Fair warning that this is a very dark and gloomy read. The protagonists all commit some pretty heinous acts which makes it hard to support them throughout. It's one of those stories where there's really no good outcome for anyone involved, and it just left me feeling depressed.
